Antique Plates Value

Collecting antique plates is not as easy as one would think – but it is rewarding. For some of us we have tracked down the rarest pieces for our collection. For others the plates and dinnerware were passed down to them through family members that kept them safe and clean. If this is the case than the first thing you will want to do is have them valued.

Every antique plate has a value that will determine what it is worth. Some are worth as little as $100 while others might be valued at over $1,000. The value is based on several factors; condition, manufacturer, age, and rarity. Each one of these will help you to know if the pieces that you have are worth something or simply good china to be used on special occasions.

Markings

The first thing you want to do is inspect the plate that you have. On the bottom of the plate will be a marking. This will help you to determine who the manufacturer and what time period it was made in. Also look at the pattern on the plate and the finish that was used on it. Some designs are printed onto the plate and some are painted. The oldest and more rare pieces were painted because the machinery did not exist or was not used for this purpose at the time it was made.

The mark is the most important defining feature that will allow you to do the most research on the plate. Use this as your guide to getting as much information on how rare it might be, when it was made, and who made it. There are several antique books and websites that will know what the mark is and give you a background into its history as well as the famous designs they were known for.

Appraise

Take a picture of the plate and take the picture to an appraiser. They might have to see the plate in person – but for now try to take just the picture and note any imperfections it might have. It is best to take it to two different appraisers to see what each has to say about it. They should be able to give you an estimate of its value. Both of these appraisers should be accredited by the Appraisers National Association.

If your plate has great value to it then you can do one of two things. You can try to list it on a website that will attract someone who is interested in collecting antiques. You can also try to keep it for as long as possible. The piece that you have could have a rich history and the older it is the more value it will gather.

If you decide to keep it remember to take good care of it. Keep it in a place where it will not be easily damaged and clean it on a regular basis. Any chips or other imperfections will decrease the value.
